Be Proactive

By being proactive with your safety and cleanliness measures, any exposure in your workplace should be limited. By keeping high-touch surfaces and common areas clean throughout the day, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing, the likelihood of transmission is low. If there is a confirmed exposure at your business, work to determine which areas may have been impacted, and focus on disinfecting and closing off these areas first. 

Wait 24 Hours Before Cleaning

As per the CDC guidelines, wait 24 hours before cleaning to reduce the chance of being exposed to any potential respiratory droplets. This allows any droplets to evaporate and makes it much less likely that anyone who is cleaning will come into contact with droplets that carry disease.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had an opportunity to show our appreciation for front-line and essential workers that are working so hard to keep our communities healthy and safe. From grocery store workers to the nurses and doctors working in our hospitals, there are many roles that play an important part in keeping essential services open and making sure that our sick and vulnerable receive the care they need.

However, there is one group that is fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines that may not immediately come to mind, and that is the janitorial and cleaning staff that have taken on an important role in keeping hospitals, businesses, and community spaces disinfected and clean so that we are able to safely access services and support other front-line staff.

Janitorial workers can often be under-appreciated in the best of times – not many people take the opportunity to stop and thank their janitor, and many work when buildings are closed for the evening, making this important service go under the radar.

Now is the perfect time to acknowledge the hard work, effort, and expertise that professional cleaning staff bring to their work. A recent article in the Tyee explored what life is like for many cleaning staff, from longer hours and increased workload to the fears they face in keeping themselves and their families safe. 

A career in janitorial services can be an amazing stepping stone to a better life for new Canadians, and those who may not have the language skills or education to begin another career right away. We recently came across a term that we think fits the current climate perfectly – disastertunity. It’s a non-sensical word that basically means “in every disaster also resides an opportunity”.  These challenging times have given us the opportunity to reflect with gratitude on how important our relationships are. We have always prided ourselves on building personal, trusting relationships between our cleaners and our clients, and this is all the more apparent during times of uncertainty. Our cleaners are more committed than ever to serving our clients diligently and thoroughly, and our janitorial staff have felt the appreciation and gratitude from their clients in return. 

Our cleaning staff are truly a part of the team of the businesses they care for and are taking their responsibility during this time to heart.
